Exploring Innovation on Rails: Highlights from Lyyli Living Lab Day 2025

Fully autonomous electric bus 2

On June 11th, the Lyyli Living Lab community came together in Tampere for an engaging afternoon focused on the future of smart mobility and collaborative innovation. The event showcased how the Lyyli tram is being used as a real-world platform for research, development, and product testing.

The day began with a public webinar titled “Utilizing Lyyli Tram in R&D”, featuring concrete examples of how companies and research institutions are leveraging the Living Lab for technology development and experimentation. One of the highlights was a presentation on the OptiPEx project, which focuses on optimizing passenger experience through real-time data and smart technologies. This was presented by Tiia Järvenpää from Teleste, who shared insights into how the project is utilizing the Lyyli tram as a test environment for developing and validating new passenger-centric solutions.

The session also included practical guidance on how new partners can get involved and make use of the platform’s unique capabilities. A lively discussion followed, highlighting the growing interest in real-life testing environments for mobility solutions.

Internal Session: Shaping the Future of the Living Lab

After a short break, the event continued with an internal session for cluster members, focusing on:

  • A detailed overview of the Lyyli Living Lab offering
  • Gathering input on the needs and ideas of participating organizations
  • A collaborative discussion on how the Living Lab should evolve to better support innovation and development

The session also provided an opportunity to reflect on ongoing projects like OptiPEx, which is actively utilizing the Lyyli tram as a testbed for developing passenger-centric solutions based on real-time data and intelligent services. The project served as a concrete example of how the Living Lab can support applied research and product development in real-world conditions.

The event underscored the value of Lyyli Living Lab as a collaborative ecosystem and a testbed for next-generation urban transport solutions. It also reinforced the importance of open dialogue and shared vision in driving sustainable mobility forward.
